How do I say no to relatives who ask for money for birthday?
When any holiday comes around my mother-in-law asks for money so she can go to the casino! My mother and father also prefer money and or gift cards, but my husband and I are on a very, very limited budget this year. I am a GREAT shopper and find amazing deals throughout the year. Just recently I found full sized bottles of designer perfume like Escape by Calvin Klein and Bulgari Pour Homme for 3 dollars! These make great gifts and they are not "cheap" gifts either I just happen to find good deals and buy off season a lot. The question is how can I tell my family I can't afford to give them 25 dollars every holiday and give them gifts that I think are very nice and also worth a lot. I am so worried about making them happy but I also can't afford what they want which is money. Isn't the "thought" that counts? My mother-in-law's birthday is this week and she probably wants money. Isn't it rude to say "I just want money"?
Tell them you can't afford large gifts. Period. But honey, I hate to tell you, but those great deals you're finding on fragrances don't exist - they're knockoffs. Plus, that's the kind of thing you shouldn't give somebody unless you know they like it - those things are very personal.
