I have a small rock about 1.5 inches wide. It is clearly cut because it is shaped like a triangle and the sides are very smooth and the corners are round. It is a whitish-clearish rock. At first glance, it looks like a regular rock (kind of like quartz) but if you hold it up to something close, you can see through the rock. For example, if I put my finger behind it, I can see my finger. But if I just hold it up in front of me, I can't see anything; it's just a plan rock. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT TYPE OF ROCK THIS IS? Please help! Thank you very much!
Just to clarify is it a rock or a mineral? If its a white-clearish mineral then there are essentially three possibilities; Quartz , Calcite or Gypsum.....it could be one of many minerals but these three are the most probable. To tell the difference simply scratch it with your thumbnail....if it scratches the surface off then its probably gypsum...if its slightly harder and does not scratch as easily then its most probably calcite...take a look at something called the Mohs hardness scale of minerals...for quartz the hardness is about 5 so it usually needs something like a penknife to scratch the surface...gypsum is 2 on the scale and calicte is 3...the fact that its cleanly cut and very smooth makes me think that you have calicte and not gypsum....for another test TASTE THE MINERAL! IF IT IS SALTY THEN IT IS GYPSUM AND NOT CALCITE! Happy testing!
