ok i have a goldfish thats a year old...its actually one of those orange white and black ones and i love my goldfish ive had him for a long time (well for a gold fish) and he lived in a 5 gallon tank with 2 others well i got a new goldfish today (i just bought a 20 gallon tank and im waiting to buy the filter cuz my boyfriend is waiting until he gets paid! well anways...now my black gold and white one (Opal is his name) is dieing i think...hes floating at the top and then acting like hes struggling to stay alive...so now ive taken him out of the tank cuz im desperate to keep him alive...ive got him a mason jar pitcher and i just dipped water out of the tank cuz im out of the chemical that you put in tap water what so yall suggest i do?
no i dont have it in the new tank yet...im waiting on the filter for it...right now im keeping them in their old tank and the 1 fish is in a tea pitcher
I don't think Opal is gonna make it. Goldfish produce a lot of waste and require more swimming space because of their round shapes. So check the water conditions (ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate) with test kits and make sure ammonia + nitrite are under 0.50 ppm and nitrate is between 10-20 ppm. Fish bowls and anything less than 10 gallons badly kills goldfish and they can only live 3 years max. Goldfish can live up to 15+ years if kept in at least 30 gallons with good water parameters and rarely get sick. But the 20 gallons is much better than the 5 gallon and they can probably live for 8+ years.
What you can do now is buy an airstone and air pump for the 20 gallon to keep the water circulating and aerated. Keep the water circulating and aerated for a week and then you can put the other goldfishes into it. Change 25% of the water everyday until the filter comes.
