Why do diamonds bright more than others?
I have two diamond rings, one of them is 1/5 of a carat and shines alot, the other one is 1/2 caract and is opaque. I cant decide which one to give to my girlfriend as an engagement ring. Also I want to know why one is less bright than the other one.
Ok, the 1/2 is not that opaque but it does not shine so much as the 1/5. I can tell the difference immediately which one is brighter.
The 1/5 I bought it from the store. But then I thought that the 1/5 was too small, so I bought another one in ebay which was 1/2 carat.
Diamonds sparkle because light enters the diamond then bounces back off the back of it by hitting the facets (how the diamond is cut). If your diamond has poor coloring that keeps it from being clear then less light will be able to get in. If there are specks of stuff (called inclusions) in the diamond then the light will hit them and bounce back to her hand rather than to the eye and it will appear less "sparkly" as well.
Cut lets you know how well the facets are placed so the light can bounce off it.
Color lets you know how clear the diamond is and how much light can get in.
Clarity is how many of the inclusions are in the diamond.
All three of these are important in determining sparkle. Since you can't really return either of the diamonds I would just give her both I suppose, or just have a friend/family memeber try to find out if she is a size queen or a quality queen. Some women would rather have the larger diamond that sparkles a little less, others insist on having a perfect stone even if it means they get a smaller one. If she is unhappy with both I guess she could trade them in towards a single engagement ring. If she picks one you can turn the other into a pendant or something for her to wear on wedding day.
