When (if ever) will religion be abandoned?
What must occur before humans will stop relying on a belief in deities, spirits, invisible powers, etc.? Or will that darkness of thought always be upon us?
It has long been obvious that most (all?) religious beliefs can be traced back to a gross lack of knowledge about the planet and the life forms on it, as well as the universe in general. As recently as the founding of the US in the late 1700s, it was not generally accepted that rocks could fall from the sky, but now we accept meteorites as a simple fact. Must a certain number of generations pass with a sufficiently-high level of knowledge before religion is scrapped? Or will science always take a back seat to closed minds of the type who claim that dinosaurs never existed and dinosaur bones were placed there by the devil to confuse us?
Will critical thought ever win out, or will we always be burdened by belief in the Bible, psychics, Feng Shui, horoscopes, and every other scrap of imaginative nonsense?
Today's major religions probably won't be abandoned until different systems come along to replace them - systems that have more practical appeal to the masses. It would be wonderful if such new systems were based on reason.
My answer is based on consideration of how some religions of the past died out. The ancient Greek and Roman religions (known today as mythology) were actually real religions in their day, with various gods and ceremonies. They were largely unstructured and widely inconsistent compared to the prominent monotheistic religions today. Many of the gods and rituals were completely different from one town to another, or even one person to another. And religion was much less of a distinct industry lead by professionals like most religions are today.
Their gods were not totally abandoned until xtianity came along. Thus, because there was little leadership, and so many different gods, cults, and ceremonies, it was relatively easy for a new centrally organized religion to take hold. When it comes to major cultural institutions such as religion, law, and education, humans seem to be naturally drawn to the more structured versions. There is also the natural animal herding tendancy, even in humans, to follow the crowd. So xtianity, which preached a relatively consistent message to large groups, was helped along by the fact that people like to congregate with other people who think and act like them.
And lastly, the most successful religions seem to have key viral aspects, whether or not they were intentionally designed for that purpose. The Catholic rules against birth control results in many more Catholics. Mormons' polygamy practices also foster growth. Many Christian sects have mandatory proselytizing, etc. It's hard for a different kind of cultural institution to compete with such viral forces.
