Bicoloured tourmaline crystals develop because:
1. the development of the crystal from one chromophore makes a crystal that only has room later for the other chromophore
2. none of the above; there’s no such thing as bicolouration in tourmaline
3. the magma that the crystal is growing from runs out of the first and atomic-site-preferential chromophore because its all used up during early crystal growth; the next-preferred chromophore begins to substitute in the crystal lattice after this happens
4. the crystallographic orientation requires different chromophores at each end
5. the crystallography is fixed upwards with regard to colouration
3 is the most correct if not overly simplistic answer. Tourmaline has several places in it's structure where it can accept 2 or more different minerals into it's crystalline structure. My personal favorite is "watermelon" because it has a reddish center and a greenish "rind". I only have samples that are black or very dark unfortunately.
