Depends on the practice. Where I work, the MAs do not code the charts but they DO code for the diagnosis for Quest Lab draws, and yes, they look them up in the big code books. Even MDs and PAs have to take coding courses. In medicine, the better you understand the whole process, the better you do. If you understand coding, then you can make sure your charting fulfills the requirements for a level 1, 3 etc and qualifies for up-charging if that is a possibility, etc. For example, a lac at 2.5 cm and less codes for a lessor charge than one 2.5 and greater. If you had no clue about that, you might just chart 2.3 cm, when if you measured and knew this, you could get more $. The apps are only as good as the data that gets into the chart.
